Preventive Dentistry for children
Avoiding dental decay or dental pain requires adherence to a good oral hygiene schedule. Brushing twice a day, in conjunction with regular dental checkups, diet counseling and modification, and fluoride treatment are all key in achieving this goal. Remember, “it’s not how much sugar you consume that causes dental decay, but how long the sugary food/liquid stays in the mouth”. All it means is that, constantly sipping apple juice or orange juice is more damaging to your child’s teeth than drinking the juice in one go, and then rinsing the mouth with water. Regular visits to our office can prevent unhealthy teeth and costly treatment down the road. Creating a tailored treatment plan specific to your child’s age and ability, we will review brushing and flossing, diet, and fluoride use at home. Regular fluoride use is one of the best means of preventing dental decay.
Restorative Dentistry
White Fillings – A composite (white) filling is a tooth-coloured resin material used to fill small to medium-sized cavities in teeth. These fillings match the color of natural tooth structure and are very durable as well. They require the most minimal tooth preparation and are the material of choice in our practice for small to moderate-sized fillings.
Stainless Steel Crowns – A crown may be required if there is extensive damage to a tooth from decay. These SS crowns are not as expensive as adult custom-made crowns, and usually last as long as the primary tooth lasts in the mouth.
Dental Sealants - The grooves on chewing surfaces of back teeth provide ideal hiding places for bacteria where they can initiate decay. Sealants reduce the risk of cavities forming in these narrow grooves that can be difficult to keep clean. These are basically a flowing version of composite fillings that flow into these grooves and harden, eliminating the risk of decay. Even adults are candidates for dental sealants.
Sports Injury Prevention (Sportsguards)
Participating in contact sports like hockey, football, karate, kickboxing, soccer, etc. puts teeth and jaws of young children at great risk. A custom-made sportsguard (available in many colors or clear) can cover teeth intimately and prevent serious injury.
